Vipers Quay is an ideal base from which to explore the South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Dart is one of the loveliest rivers in the country. A water bus runs from the village to Dartmouth, from where river boats cruise up to Totnes.Both these ancient towns are interesting and attractive and have excellent restaurants. Dartmoor, with its rugged tors and wild ponies, has stunning moorland scenery. There are several National Trust and other historic houses and castles within easy range and golf, sailing and other activities can all be found close by. For children, besides the local beaches, the area provides many attractions as well as opportunities for horse riding, sailing, canoeing, etc.

Sailing & boat hire. Boats, both sailing boats and motor boats, can be hired locally and also in Dartmouth by those wishing to sail, fish or explore the river. There is a sailing school in the village.

Golf. There are several golf courses in the vicinity. The nearest, (5m), is the Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa, with a 72 par championship course and also a 9 hole course.

There are steam railways at Totnes, to Buckfastleigh, where there is an otter sanctuary and butterfly centre and there is also a steam railway at Kingswear, to Paignton. Other attractions popular with children include Pennywell Farm close to Buckfastleigh, the excellent zoo at Paignton and a model village at Babbacombe, and there are several opportunities for horse riding. Woodlands Leisure Park (5m) has lots of rides and activities for children.

There are some glorious gardens and several National Trust and other historic properties within easy range of Vipers Quay - Greenway House, once the home of Agatha Christie, with its lovely woodland gardens, lies just across the river, reached by ferry from the village.
